BARHC aims to improve the health of low-income patients by providing community resources and legal assistance. To help in these efforts, BARHC relies on volunteers to work one-on-one with low-income patients at Bay Area hospitals. Volunteers help:
Determine resource needs.
Provide immediate, targeted interventions about available resources.
Offer referrals for clinic or community-based social, financial and legal professioanl services.
Make follow-up calls and offer additional resources.
To ensure volunteers have experiences with all of these skills and responsibilities, BARHC training addresses these and related areas. Therefore, volunteers do not need any field-specific experience prior to training. Volunteers, however, must be willing to work with patients in a clinical setting and be able to commit to at least a four-hour weekly shift for one year minimum. Bilingualism in English/Spanish is desirable, but not required. Please note that training requirements may vary for some sites.
